Silver Nanoparticles Functionalized by Fluorescein Isothiocyanate or Rhodamine B Isothiocyanate: Fluorescent and Plasmonic Materials

This paper presents the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) functionalized with fluorescent molecules, in particular xanthene-based dyes, i.e., fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC, λmax = 485 nm) and rhodamine B (RITC, 555 nm). An in-depth characterization particle–dye systems, AgNPs–RITC AgNPs–FITC, is presented to evaluate their chemical structure optical properties due interaction between plasmonic absorption properties. UV–Vis spectroscopy dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements confirmed nanosize AgNPs–FITC. Synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron (SR-XPS) was used study surface functionalization by structural characterization, confirming/examining isothiocyanate–metal interaction. For AgNPs–RITC, which fluorescence peak are not superimposed, transient dynamics dye were also studied. Transient showed that exciting sample at a wavelength corresponding AgNP plasmon resonance, it possible preferentially excite RITC molecules attached NPs respect free solution. These results demonstrate how, combining plasmonics fluorescence, these AgNPs can be as promising systems biosensing imaging applications.
